When to Wash/Clean Your Hands
Use Liquid Soap or Equivalent:
BEFORE
- putting on gloves
- contact with a susceptible patient or site (i.e. inspection of IVI site or wound) or emptying urine drainage bag
- caring for patients on isolation precautions
AFTER
- putting on gloves
- contact with a susceptible patient or site (i.e. inspection of IVI site or wound) or emptying urine drainage bag
- caring for patients on isolation precautions
Use Alcohol Gel OR Skin Disinfectant Hand Wash:
BEFORE
- Eputting on gloves
- contact with a susceptible patient or site (i.e. inspection of IVI site or wound) or emptying a urine drainage bag
- caring for patients on isolation precautions
AFTER
- caring for patients on isolation precautions
- handling contaminated equipment or laundry
Use Skin Disinfectant Hand Wash:
- if hands are soiled with body fluids (blood, faeces, vomit, sputum, etc.)
- before an aseptic technique or invasive procedures
- before starting a shift in intensive care
Skin Disinfectant Hand Wash can be:
- Chlorhexadine gluconate (i.e. Hibiscrub)
OR
- Povidine-iodine (i.e. Betadine)
