Apart from smallpox and pneumonic plague, most of the infections considered to be potential agents of bioterrorism do not readily spread from person to person. Nevertheless, any patient presenting with a febrile illness in circumstances where the source is suspected to have been a deliberate release must be managed as described here with strict attention to patient isolation and infection control procedures. Infections with potential for use in deliberate release include: anthrax, botulism, brucellosis, glanders, melioidosis, plague, Q fever, tularaemia and viral haemorrhagic fever.
